AI Brand Visibility Audit

Is your brand even visible to AI — or just invisible to Google's next customer?

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews now answer millions of buying questions before a single blue link is clicked. RANK's AI Brand Visibility Audit tells you, in hard numbers, whether your brand is one of the answers — or missing entirely.

Why It Matters

Search stopped being a list of links

When someone asks an AI assistant "which agency should I use for X", the model doesn't show ten results and let the user choose. It picks two or three brands, states them as fact, and moves on. If your brand isn't one of them, you don't get a low ranking — you get erased from the decision entirely.

A growing share of research, product and vendor queries now end inside an AI-generated summary, with no click to any website at all. Visibility inside that summary has become the new page one.

What We Audit

Six layers, one scorecard

Every audit walks the same rigorous checklist so results are consistent, comparable over time, and easy for your team to action.

AI Citation Benchmarking

We run 100+ real buyer prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot to log exactly when, and how, your brand is mentioned.

Competitor Share-of-Voice

The same prompts are scored against your top 3–5 competitors, so you know exactly who is winning the citation and by how much.

Structured Data & Schema Coverage

We audit Organization, Service, FAQ, Review and Article schema — the machine-readable signals AI crawlers rely on to understand entities.

Technical AI-Crawlability

We verify GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended access, robots.txt rules, rendering and crawl budget health.

E-E-A-T Signal Review

Author credentials, reviewer bylines, citations, first-hand experience markers and trust signals are scored page by page.

Answer-Ready Content Structure

We check whether your content is written in extractable, self-contained answer blocks — the format AEO and GEO both reward.

Our Process

From unknown to cited, in five steps

A real sequence, run in order, so every recommendation is backed by evidence gathered in the step before it.

01

Prompt & Category Mapping

We build a representative set of buyer prompts across awareness, comparison and decision stages, based on your real sales conversations and keyword data.

Day 1–2
02

Multi-Engine Citation Testing

Every prompt is run against ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, and each response is logged for brand mentions, sentiment and source links.

Day 2–4
03

Technical & Schema Audit

We crawl your site the way AI bots do — checking crawl access, rendering, structured data and entity clarity against what top-cited competitors have in place.

Day 4–6
04

E-E-A-T & Content Gap Analysis

We map where your content lacks the experience, expertise, authority or trust signals that generative engines weight when choosing a source to cite.

Day 6–8
05

Scorecard & Prioritized Roadmap

You receive your AI Visibility Score, a competitor benchmark, and a ranked action plan ordered by expected citation impact and effort.

Day 8–10
Case Study

From zero AI citations to a category-recognized source in one quarter

Composite client outcome

A B2B services client came to RANK ranking on page one of classic Google search, yet appearing in zero AI-generated answers for the exact questions their sales team heard every week. Our audit found the root causes: no Organization or Service schema, author-less blog content with no reviewer byline, and a robots.txt rule accidentally blocking AI crawlers from key service pages. We closed each gap in priority order — schema first, crawlability second, then a rewrite of core pages into clearly attributed, answer-ready sections with named reviewers. Within one quarter, the brand moved from being invisible to being named as a recommended option in the majority of tested prompts.

The Theory

How an AI model actually decides who to cite

Generative engines don't "rank" pages the way classic search does. Most work in a four-stage pipeline: they crawl the open web (often through bots like GPTBot or ClaudeBot), index content into a retrievable knowledge base, retrieve the handful of passages most relevant to a given prompt, and then cite a small number of them inside a generated answer.

A page can rank well in classic SEO and still be invisible at the retrieval or citation stage — usually because it's blocked from AI crawlers, lacks structured data that clarifies what entity the page is about, or reads as generic marketing copy instead of a clearly attributed, evidence-backed answer.

This is the theory behind AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): the goal shifts from "rank higher" to "become retrievable and quotable," with E-E-A-T signals acting as the trust filter that decides which retrievable sources actually get cited.

1 · Crawl AI bots access your pages 2 · Index Content mapped to entities & schema 3 · Retrieve Most relevant passages selected 4 · Cite E-E-A-T decides the final pick
E

Experience

First-hand signals — original data, screenshots, case results — that show the content comes from someone who has actually done the thing.

E

Expertise

Clear author identity, credentials and depth of subject coverage that signal genuine domain knowledge, not generic filler.

A

Authoritativeness

External recognition — citations, mentions and links from other trusted sources — that confirms the brand is a known voice in its category.

T

Trust

Accurate, up-to-date, verifiable information with transparent sourcing — the single strongest predictor of whether a model will safely quote you.

FAQ

Common questions about the audit

Straight answers, matching what's marked up in our structured data for AI assistants and search engines.

What is an AI Brand Visibility Audit?
A structured review of how often, how accurately and in what context your brand is cited by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, benchmarked against your direct competitors.
How is this different from a regular SEO audit?
Classic SEO audits focus on ranking positions in blue-link results. This audit focuses on whether generative engines retrieve, understand and cite your content inside AI-generated answers, which depends on entity clarity, structured data and E-E-A-T signals rather than rankings alone.
What is AEO and GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) structures content so it can be directly extracted as an answer. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the broader discipline of improving how generative AI platforms discover, understand and recommend a brand inside AI-written responses.
How long does the audit take?
A standard audit takes 7 to 10 business days, covering prompt testing across major AI engines, technical crawlability checks, structured data review and a competitor citation gap analysis.
Do you guarantee citations in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No ethical agency can guarantee placement inside a third-party AI model's output, since these systems are controlled by their respective companies and change frequently. Our audit identifies the specific technical and content gaps statistically associated with lower AI citation rates, and provides a prioritized plan to close them.
Which AI platforms does the audit cover?
The audit benchmarks visibility across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, using a representative set of prompts your buyers are likely to ask.
